MAHENDRANAGAR, FEB 26 - At least eight people were injured, one critically, in a clash between activists of Nepali Congress-affiliated Nepal Students' Union (NSU) and UCPN (Maoist)-affiliated All Nepal National Independent Students' Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) in the district on Monday. The clash ensued between the NSU and the ANNISU-R activists at the Mahendranagar-based Siddhanath Science Campus. Seven injured received treatment at Mahakali Zonal Hospital while Chandra Kanta Bhatta, ANNISU-R district chairman, was referred to Nepalgunj for further treatment. He sustained serious head injuries.
The skirmish erupted following a dispute over programmes to be organised during the college's upcoming anniversary. Both the unions blamed each other for the clash.
The enraged students also vandalised the campus building. A lecturer said irate students vandalised three computers, a printer, furniture and smashed window panes. A large number of police personnel were deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, ANNISU-R activists barged into the District Forest Office (DFO) and vandalised telephone and furniture in the office chief's room. A group of around 50 people led by ANNISU-R central member Bishnu Upadhyay demanded the DFO officials to withdraw a case against ANNISU-R activist Rakesh Chad. Chad was arrested few days ago on the charge of timber smuggling from the Baijanath Community Forest.www.daillyupdate.blogspot.com
