Nepali Congress takes a beating
KATHMANDU: Following intense pressure from ruling Maoist party and some members from the opposition, the Central Working Committee of the Nepali Congress unanimously decided on party President Sushil Koirala’s name for the prime ministerial post this afternoon. After the top three leaders — Koirala, Ramchandra Paudel and Sher Bahadur Deuba — agreed on party president’s name in the morning, NC had called an emergency meeting of the CWC to approve the decision. “During the meeting, Deuba proposed Koirala’s name, I seconded the proposal and the CWC endorsed it unanimously,” said Paudel. Koirala, during the meeting, expressed his commitment to settle all the national issues and do everything possible to help Congress emerge as the winner in the election, sources said. An upbeat NC then attended the meeting of the four major forces — Unified CPN-Maoist, NC, CPN-UML and United Democratic Madhesi Front — in the evening. NC, in the beginning of the meeting, proposed Koirala as the consensus prime minister candidate, but UCPN-M Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal gave a shocker as he sought a package deal on agreements reached in the past.
